While lion turtles are not known or very common in either series, in Wan's lifetime, they were the protectors of humankind.
Legend of korra season 2 first avatar how to#
During the original series' 4-part finale, the audience is introduced to lion turtles for the first time, one of which showed Aang how to take away a person's bending. While these episodes did set up the next Harmonic Convergence where Korra would face Vaatu, they also explained many occurrences from The Last Airbender. RELATED: Avatar Theory: Was Meant to Be the Next Avatar Despite starting off as reckless and easy to anger, Wan grew into a courageous and compassionate Avatar, which enabled him to imprison Vaatu and become the bridge between the two worlds. Wan became the first person to live among both humans and spirits peacefully by understanding and respecting both sides. During this time, spirits and humans were always at odds and resented each other. The ones who did leave did so to gather food and were granted bending by a lion turtle to keep them safe in the wild, though the element had to be given back upon their return.

The prevalence of spirits caused humans to retreat into villages, almost never leaving home. Through Wan's journey, the audience witnesses life before the Avatar and the Four Nations. So, to carry on the legacy, the Avatar cycle was born like the passing of the torch. During Harmonic Convergence, he fuses with Raava, entering the Avatar state and becoming the world's first Avatar. To keep the peace, Wan sends the spirits back to their own realm and closes the portals, though humankind still needed to learn how to live together. To make things right, Wan teams up with Raava and learns to control the four elements one at a time. When Wan meets Raava, the spirit of light and Vaatu, the spirit of darkness, he is tricked into freeing Vaatu from Raava's 10,000 year hold, putting the world on the verge of chaos and destruction. There, he learns to live among and befriend them and in turn, they help him master firebending from the dragons. Sick of living in poverty, he rises up to fight back, but is ultimately banished to live out in wilds overrun by spirits. So, for two episodes we follow Wan, an impulsive, impatient thief. The Fire Sages try to save her by connecting her to the origins of the Avatar. These episodes take place when Korra loses her memories and becomes stranded on an island after being attacked by a dark spirit.
